What Do We Say When Difficult Moments Happen in the Classroom?

Hey Reader,

One of the most powerful parts of any professional development session is not always the presentation itself — it’s the questions that come afterward.

Recently, I had the opportunity to respond to thoughtful follow-up questions from educators who were navigating difficult classroom moments involving race, identity, peer conflict, restorative practices, and inclusive teaching.

And honestly? These were the kinds of questions many educators are quietly carrying every single day:

• What do I say when a student makes a hurtful comment?
• How do I respond without shaming a child?
• What happens when the behavior is learned at home?
• How do we teach difficult history in developmentally appropriate ways?
• How do we create inclusive classrooms without feeling overwhelmed?

One thing I want educators to remember:
You do not have to be perfect to do this work well.

You simply need consistency, compassion, accountability, and the willingness to keep learning alongside your students.

Some of the biggest takeaways from our conversation included:

✨ “Repair matters.”
When harm happens in a classroom, we cannot simply move on without acknowledging it. Students need opportunities to repair relationships, reflect, and grow.

✨ “Consistency builds culture.”
Students notice when expectations shift. Inclusive classroom culture happens when adults consistently respond to harmful language and behavior.

✨ “Inclusive teaching is not a holiday activity.”
Representation should not only appear during Black History Month or special celebrations. It should be woven throughout the curriculum all year long.

✨ “Students need brave spaces.”
Difficult conversations about race, culture, bias, and history require classrooms where students feel emotionally safe, respected, and heard.

✨ “Teachers need support too.”
This work is emotional labor. Educators deserve resources, collaboration, and administrative support while navigating these conversations.

During the discussion, I also shared practical strategies like:
• Morning meeting discussion prompts
• One-line classroom responses
• Restorative circle practices
• Documentation strategies
• Age-appropriate language supports
• Community-building ideas
• Ways to scaffold difficult historical topics

One reminder I shared repeatedly:
“Start small, small.”

You are not going to solve everything in one lesson or one school year. But every intentional conversation matters.

Thank you to every educator continuing to show up for students with care, courage, and humanity.

With gratitude,

Jebeh Edmunds
